Cake Eaters Out

Dear Cake Eaters,
We want to sincerely thank you for your immense support of the potential Academy Award campaign for Kristen as Best Supporting Actress. Unfortunately, due to a technicality, the film can not be considered because the Academy stipulates that all films must be exhibited on a specific film/digital format in Los Angeles.

Although The Cake Eaters was released at two movie theaters in Los Angeles in March ’09 -- in fact, the film screened nationwide on over 50 screens -- we did not screen on the specific film/digital format specified in the Academy's rules (DCP). We could re-release the film in LA on an approved format before the end of '09 but since The Cake Eaters was released on DVD in the interim we still wouldn't qualify because the qualifying run needs to happen prior to the film being released on any other formats -- ahhhh, don't you just love technicalities!!!

We are truly bummed as we're sure you must be -- Kristen's performance is truly amazing in this film and we hope she gets the recognition she deserves at other awards shows. Thank you all for your votes, feedback, and continued support!

"...a group of stars converged quietly at the Owenego Inn recently to receive a lesser-known, but personally important honor: the first Friends and Allies Award from the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance.

The connection that brought acclaimed actress Mary Stuart Masterson, her husband, actor Jeremy Davidson (who appears in the TV series “Army Wives”) and screenwriter and actor Jayce Bartok to Branford is two sisters who are Southern Connecticut State University students and have Friedreich’s ataxia, a progressive neuromuscular disease.

A very pregnant Masterson, who blended with the crowd at the seventh annual Find A Cure dinner at the Owenego Inn, said the Bode girls gave invaluable insight to actress Kristen Stewart, now of “Twilight” fame, in playing the main character, Georgia. Georgia is a high school girl affected with Friedreich’s who decides that given the progression that has her on the verge of needing a wheelchair full time and perhaps a limited life span, she wants to experience a sexual encounter. She does so with a local young man nicknamed “Beagle.”

Masterson filmed the interview she did with the Bode girls, in which she asked them some “very personal” questions and even had them get out of their wheelchairs to demonstrate how they walk. She then sent the interview to Stewart.

“It gave her (Stewart) confidence that she could have an attitude” in playing the character, Masterson said. “It showed her the kind of resolve they have and the ferocity with which they live their lives.”

When I was spotted doing this by a store manager and asked what I was doing, I explained that it was supposed to be there next to Twilight. He let me keep The Cake Eaters next to Twilight. Great great movie!"

The Cake Eaters and MSM in Huntington, NY!

Mary Stuart Masterson and The Cake Eaters will be making an appearance at The Cinema Arts Center in Huntington, NY this Friday May 8th!

As reported in Newsday:

“The Cake Eaters,” a film about the lives and relationships of two families in rural upstate New York, comes to the Cinema Arts Centre on Friday with an appearance by actress Mary Stuart Masterson, who directed the movie.

Tickets to see her feature directorial debut are $9 for members and $12 for the public; admission includes reception and discussion. Reservations are recommended for the event, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

The Cinema Arts Centre is at 423 Park Ave., Huntington. Call 631-423-7611 or visit cinemaartscentre.org for more information.

Why the heck the title?

So I'm dying to know what all you "reshufflers" think the title, The Cake Eaters, means. When we played the film all over the country, and in Europe too, it was usually the first and most hotly debated question, "What the heck is a Cake Eater?"

As the screenwriter, I always had to, gulp, step up and do some explaining. Now if you google it, you'll find all kind of dark, peculiar references and definitions. But don't listen to any of those....use the force, dig deep, think about the movie, those lost characters struggling....ahhhh, I've said too much. Come on and write me, and let me know what you think the title means. And the picture posted is actually graffitti written on a bathroom wall after a screening of The Cake Eaters in Vermont. I snapped it with my camera phone, and got some strange looks.
